The test is carried out directly on amniotic fluid cells/cells from chorionic villi without cell cultivation and provides a result on the number of chromosomes 13, 18 and 21 as well as the number of sex chromosomes within 24 - 48 hours. Bloody amniotic fluid cannot be used primarily, as heavy contamination with maternal cells can lead to a misinterpretation of the result.
